Big Love: When Great TV Shows Know When to End

Big Love: When Great TV Shows Know When to End

"Canceled." It's the one word that fans never want to hear about their favorite TV shows. But what happens when it's the show's producers who decide to end the show? Well, generally, that's a good thing.

On Oct. 28, HBO announced that its polygamist drama, Big Love, will return for its fifth and final season on Jan. 16. "When we created Big Love in 2002, we had a strong conception of the journey the Henrickson family would make over the course of the series, of the story we had to tell," executive producers Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer said in a statement.  "While we were in the writers' room this year shaping our fifth season, we discovered that we were approaching the culmination of that story."

The Big Love producers couldn't be more right. The fourth season of Big Love started to slip (Chloe Sevigny, one of the show's sister wives, even called it "awful") and once the Henricksons decided to announce their polygamist lifestyle to their community, well, there just wasn't much more storyline left to explore.

Wouldn't you rather the producers be selfless (it's their paychecks that will be affected!) and end a show when they know their story is winding down? After all, there are only two other fates a show can face:

Option #1: A show gets canceled prematurely. When this happens, there are two possible sub-options. A show never gets to wrap up its story, or its forced to tie up all of its loose ends in one final, rushed episode. October Road (ABC) had to conclude its story with a previously-unseen episode on their Season 2 DVD. Fans of Las Vegas (NBC) are still upset that writers weren't given the time to write a satisfying ending. Pushing Daisies tried to polish off the characters' storylines at warp speed in one abrupt final episode.

Option #2: A show gets dragged out past its prime and dies a long, slow death. This is even more depressing when it happens to a really great show. Welcome Back, Kotter tried to survive past the departure of John Travolta, which was not easy to watch. The X-Files continued on for four seasons after the film was released, and even tried to last after David Duchovny exited the show, causing the show to end on a sour note. ER lost most of its original cast and yet it still kept trying to revive patients. And current shows like Desperate Housewives, which admittedly is still drawing in huge numbers, will probably recycle storylines until the cows come home.

So, yes, what the Big Love producers are doing is the best thing they can do. Though no TV watcher ever wants to say goodbye to the characters they've known to grow and love, it sadly has to happen at some point. And what's more appropriate than a fitting goodbye? More producers should take notes from shows like Lost, Sex and the City, The Sopranos and Six Feet Under (which arguably had the best series finale ever), and finish off their shows at the right time. Though we may be sad at first, we'll thank them in the end.

Britney Spears 'Glee' Episode Draws Record-Setting Ratings

Tribute episode brings in 13.3 million viewers.

Madonna's "Glee" tribute episode might have been titled "The Power of Madonna," but it was the show's tribute to Britney Spears that reigned supreme. The broadcast, which featured cameos from the pop princess herself, drew 13.3 million viewers, leading the 8 p.m. hour and posting its best-ever rating among adults 18-49.

Tuesday night's episode, appropriately titled "Britney/Brittany," had a 5.8 rating and rose 4 percent from last week's season-two premiere. The feat made history for "Glee," as it becomes the first series since NBC's "Seinfeld" in 1993 to debut as the top series of the week and then spike in ratings the following week, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The episode, which highlighted Heather Morris' character Brittany S. Pearce, revolved around the McKinley High students' fight to perform Britney Spears numbers. Through anesthesia-induced sequences, the Gleeks tapped into their inner pop star to perform renditions of the singer's hits, including " ... Baby One More Time" and "Me Against the Music."

In addition to Spears' appearances on the hit Fox show, the singer took to Twitter during the West Coast premiere to thank fans for campaigning in support of the episode. "I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!" she tweeted. The pop princess also gave props to the many song and video re-creations, including "I'm a Slave 4 U," saying, "Slave: Oh ... My ... God ...! Those little boys are SO cute! I know how hard it is to dance with that snake! Nice job."

Spears' manager, Adam Leber, also showed his appreciation for the episode, which spawned multiple trending topics on Twitter. "So glad you guys loved the GLEE episode! The Overwhelming worldwide response has been insane.3 of the top 10 worldwide trending topics.Sick! Big big big thank you to Ryan Murphy, the incredible cast and Brit's fans for making it happen...."

After such success, it wouldn't be surprising if the rumors of a second Spears-devoted episode came true, since "Britney/Brittany" only included hits from the first few years of the singer's career.

Rihanna Teases 'Saturday Night Live' Skit

'I'm excited to perform, but definitely excited to do another digital short,' she tells MTV News.

Last December, Rihanna appeared in an Emmy-nominated "Saturday Night Live" sketch. This week, the Loud singer will return to the "SNL" stage as the night's performer, and she promised that she will appear in another digital short.

"I'm excited, of course. We're gonna do a [sketch], definitely," she told MTV News on Thursday. "I was most looking forward to that, 'cause I really enjoyed it last time. I really enjoyed, like, the whole 'SNL' experience, so I'm excited to perform, but definitely excited to do another digital short."

For those not familiar with the sketch, Rihanna visited the school of Shy Ronnie (played by Andy Samberg) and sang the hook on Ronnie's rap song. She occasionally had to tell him, in song, to "speak up" or "I'll take it from here," because Ronnie barely gets above a whisper when he raps.

The video was just a glimpse into Rihanna's acting skills, which she will certainly display on the big screen in the upcoming "Battleship" movie. She told MTV News that her recent on-set experience has made her a better actor, which she hopes to show off Saturday night, live or in a pre-taped short.

"Acting classes as well as learning from the experience of acting and filming definitely will help, because that's all acting in those skits," she said. "So, definitely, it comes in handy."

Are you looking forward to seeing Rihanna's newfound acting skills on "SNL"? Let us know in the comments!

Kanye West Finishes My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Star tweets picture of finalized fifth album that confirms tracks like 'Monster' and 'Lost in the World' will be included.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

There has been much speculation about which songs will make the cut for Kanye West's upcoming release, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The superstar spitter recently ended much of that speculation by tweeting a picture of the final album, which revealed the LP's track list.

"We finally done! Toast!" West short film "Runaway," such as the all-star collabo "All Of The Lights" and the final song of the movie, "Lost in the World." Some of the MC's G.O.O.D. Friday joints appear on the album, including "Monster," "Devil in a New Dress" and Yeezy's favorite "So Appalled." The MC's two official singles, "Power" and "Runaway," seem to have landed on the record as the third and ninth joints, respectively.

Just last Saturday, when Yeezy sat down with MTV for a live Q&A session following the premiere of "Runaway," the MC revealed he wasn't sure which songs would make the album, but did hint at which tracks may be released as bonus cuts.

"And we got a few bonus tracks, like 'See Me Now,' 'Mama's Boy' and some bonus tracks after that. There's like 13 or 14 songs ... maybe 'Chain Heavy' will be on there. We have to make a decision by tomorrow," he said.

West, who ripped into hackers when "Lost in the World" was prematurely leaked in September, also maintained that the tracks slated to appear on Fantasy will be of superior quality to any of the tracks circulating on the Web.

"So there's maybe 13 or 14 tracks, but they're way produced. Far from any bootleg, far from any hacker," he insisted. "A hacker, man, can't give you what I can give you once it's the whole product."

Ozzy Osbourne, Yusuf Islam Duel At Jon Stewart Rally

The O'Jays also hit the stage at Stewart and Stephen Colbert's 'Rally to Restore Sanity And/Or Fear.'

Thousands of fans crowded the National Mall in Washington DC Saturday (October 30) for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's "Rally to Restore Sanity And/Or Fear," and the two politician-skewering funnymen trotted out a slew of legends to entertain the crowd.

About midway through the show, which already featured a nearly 40-minute set from John Legend and The Roots, Stewart announced the next performer, Yusuf Islam. The folk icon formerly known as Cat Stevens, hit the stage with an acoustic rendition of "Peace Train." However, instead of letting Yusuf placidly strum along, Colbert stormed the stage, ranting about the song's message of harmony. The satirical pundit then proclaimed, "My train is arriving at the stage now and the conductor has an important announcement to make!"

Colbert did a fine job of busting up the performance, and cleared the way for a surprise appearance from one of rock and roll's greatest show-stoppers: Ozzy Osbourne. Decked out in a black ensemble with his signature colored glasses, the Prince of Darkness screamed as he took the stage and led the band through the metal classic "Crazy Train."

However, before Osbourne could finish, Stewart snatched the mic and reprised the whole interrupting-the-rock-legend-thing, spewing protests like, "I will not get on that train! I am not comfortable on that train!" Stewart commanded Yusuf to start up again with "Peace Train," until Colbert jumped in, saying, "I'm gonna pull the emergency brake on this rainbow, moonbeam choo-choo!" Osbourne and Yusuf went back and forth, volleying metal and folk classics about trains, until both gave up the fight, embraced each other and left the stage.

But the audience wasn't left without a stellar performance from some music legends. Colbert and Stewart paced about, lamenting the lack of singers to belt train-related hits, until a line from the smooth chorus of the O'Jays "Love Train" wafted through the air.

"Is that the sound of Philadelphia?" Stewart wondered.

Colbert queried, "Was that the sweet Philly soul?"

It sure was. The legendary soul group then took the stage in slick white suits, busting easy throwback moves to their 1973 single to the delight of the crowd.

Britney Spears Tweets About 'Glee' Tribute Episode

'I loved it!' writes the pop star, who also thanked fans and shared her thoughts on the show's covers.
By James Dinh

Britney Spears and Heather Morris on the set of "Glee"

Britney Spears fans are a force to be reckoned with. Earlier this year, they campaigned for an episode of "Glee" to be dedicated solely to their favorite pop princess. And after much anticipation, on Tuesday night the students of McKinley High shimmied, crooned and danced their way in tribute to the entertainer. The singer took to Twitter to thank her fans for their efforts and shared her thoughts on the program, titled "Britney/Brittany," and its covers of her songs.

"I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!" Britney tweeted. In particular, the star seemed to enjoy the renditions of her classic tunes, saying, "I love this version of Stronger. Artie did a great job," and "The GLEE version of Toxic is amazing!"

While some of the McKinley High students — including Cheerio cheerleader Brittany S. Pearce (played by Heather Morris) — went into anesthesia--induced dream sequences to channel their inner Britney, Spears herself emerged throughout the episode's hallucinogenic fantasies. Appearing as Madonna's character at the end of "Me Against the Music," a high-school teacher in "... Baby One More Time" and a fellow cheerleader, the singer remained a source of inspiration for the Gleekers.

Spears gave kudos to co-star Morris, saying, "Awww Heather Morris is sooo cute! Brittany S Pearce. Ha! She was so fun to work with and was really sweet in person."

The singer not only applauded Morris' friendliness, but also her rendition of "I'm a Slave 4 U." She wrote of the sultry production, "Slave: Oh ... My ... God ...! Those little boys are SO cute! I know how hard it is to dance with that snake! Nice job." The pop star also was surprised at how well the show re-created the music video set of her 2003 Madonna duet, "Me Against the Music," pointing out that it "looks just like the original," and adding, "Santana does a great Madonna impression."

As the students walked Spears through memory lane, Lea Michele's cover of "... Baby One More Time" also had the singer reminiscing. "Watching Baby brings back so many memories! Feels like yesterday," she explained.

John Stamos also made a guest appearance in the episode, as the dentist who sends the Gleeks into Britney world. Spears made it clear that the 47-year-old actor looks as good as he did during his heyday. "John Stamos is still hot! He looks the same as he did on Full House," she tweeted.

As with many "Glee" fans, Britney found a pleasantly odd interest in Jane Lynch, who plays the aggressive cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, describing the actress as "hilarious and scary all rolled into one."

Spears wasn't the only one who enjoyed filming the tribute episode — the "Glee" castmembers recently dished on working with the star. Morris told Australian magazine TV Week that the singer was her childhood inspiration. "She was my idol from, like, age 12 to 16," she said. "I sang to her [songs] in my living room and danced to her — I learned all her moves. And I had my talent shows and I lip-synched to her. I just kept flashing back to growing up and being obsessed with her."

Naya Rivera, who plays Santana, also spoke highly of the pop icon. "I love Britney Spears. I mean, who doesn't? We all grew up with her," she proclaimed in a promo video for the show. "The first music purchase I ever made was '... Baby One More Time' on cassette. [It was like], 'Britney Spears is going to be in my mitts, what do I do?' [And I was like], 'Hi Britney!' And then she was like, 'Hey!' She was awesome and beautiful. She was, like, magical."

Diddy Says 'Young Gun' Drake Gave Him Valuable Advice

Toronto MC 'went above and beyond,' Diddy says of MC jumping on Diddy-Dirty Money track 'Loving You No More.'
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Ricky Louis

According to Diddy, he had a specific plan when he mapped out Last Train to Paris.

"I wanted to be smart enough to go to the newest generation, the flyest, young gun of MCs and writers and humbly ask them for help," he told MTV News. "To be honest, a lot of cats were busy. I can respect that. But Drake took the time to stop what he was doing and he was the hottest one in the game. He came to my house for two days, we went to Canada for three days."

The result was "Loving You No More," the latest single from Diddy's Dirty Money project, Last Train. Diddy and Drake shot the video in Miami with Gil Green, and the Bad Boy Records head explained that "Loving You No More" is about losing yourself by trying to please someone else.

"[The video] is really about me being in a relationship with a young lady and you're constantly loving this person," he said. "And hoping that this day comes where they change and they love you back."

The long-delayed Last Train to Paris is set for a December 14 release and Diddy credits Drake, among others, with helping to push the project along.

"[Drake] gave me advice for records when I needed somebody else, a fresh ear and he went above and beyond," Diddy said. "I appreciate him for that. This is a big record for us because of that and because of the way he treated me and we didn't really know each other. He treated me with so much respect, so much love. And he's one of my favorite MCs, period, so working with him was dope."

'It feels like it's more of a documentary,' one fan says after preview of 'Never Say Never' clip at concert in L.A.

Some lucky Justin Bieber fans got the first glimpse of what to expect from his 3-D movie when he premiered the trailer for "Never Say Never" during his My World Tour stop in Los Angeles on Monday night. And the verdict from the fans MTV News spoke with can be summed up in one word: amazing.

"He said, 'Hey L.A., we have a special surprise for you. Something no one else has seen yet and you're only seeing it here tonight,' " Nicole Reddin recalled after the Staples Center concert. "And everyone was super excited. It feels like it's more of a documentary. It's a little bit more real than the things you see. It's a lot more [that] you get to know him and that's what we want to see."

Priestly Cleveland gave the trailer a glowing review. "It's the trailer for his movie, which is actually coming out Valentine's Day weekend. ... I loved it," she said. "My favorite part of the trailer was definitely when he was younger and singing and playing the guitar. I loved it ... it was cute, classic."

Added Juliana En, "It shows a bunch of baby pictures of him while he's growing up and pictures of him backstage just, like, doing random stuff."

The preview had special meaning for another longtime Belieber. "I remember when I used to watch Justin Bieber on YouTube before he got famous and I was totally a fan," Rachel Kelly said. "So this is really exciting."

"Never Say Never" won't hit theaters until February, but the singer's fans plan to keep busy until the flick's release date.

"I can't wait to see it," Cleveland told us. "In the meantime, I'm just gonna keep going on YouTube."

Jay-Z, Eminem Close Yankee Stadium Shows With Kanye West, Drake

Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, 50 Cent also make appearances at last of four Home and Home concerts.
By Jayson Rodriguez

NEW YORK — Like a good cleanup man in baseball, Jay-Z delivers big hits on a consistent basis.

On Tuesday night (September 14) at Yankee Stadium, the Brooklyn rapper closed out the fourth of his and Eminem's Home and Home shows (two in Detroit, two in the Bronx) with a performance that would make A-Rod envious.

"Break a record in this bitch, Hov," he rapped during a freestyle right after the opening number, the intro to his The Dynasty: Roc La Familia album. "Hit them with that BALCO."

The Roc Nation head, however, wouldn't need any performance-enhancing substances to give him an extra boost on this night. He confidently cruised through 90 minutes of material; Jay-Z was just as cool as the fall night.

Kanye West quickly arrived onstage two songs into the show for a mini-set of his own, riding shotgun with Hov on the "Power" remix and "Monster."

Jay-Z grabbed the crowd's attention again minutes later with an anecdote about his exit from the venue the night before. The legendary MC said on the way out after Monday's performance he ran into rap pioneer Kool Herc. Jay said he asked Herc to join him for Tuesday night's festivities, thanking Herc for creating hip-hop culture. "We wouldn't be here without you," he said.

"You ready for me to get out of here yet?" 'Ye asked Hov, bringing it back to the present.

"Not yet, we going all the way tonight," Jay-Z responded.

The Chicago star then burst into his "Good Life."

Next, Swizz Beatz joined Jay for "On to the Next One" before Eminem and the iconic lyricist traded verses on their collabo "Renegade." Eminem was agile onstage next to Jay-Z and appeared in arguably the best shape of his career.

"Go to war with the Mormons/ Take a bath with the Catholics," Em rapped. "In holy water/ No wonder they try to hold me under longer/ I'm a mother----in' spiteful, delightful, eyeful/ The new Ice Cube, mother----ers hate to like you."

Earlier in the evening, Eminem brought the capacity crowd to its feet by bringing out 50 Cent, who then brought out G-Unit's Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo with him. The trio from Queens sported glow-in-the-dark gear as the lights cut out during 50's performance of "I Get Money." Later, Fif ceded the stage to Em, and the Detroit superstar brought out Dr. Dre.

The hulking producer treated the crowd to "Still D.R.E." and "Nuthin' but a G Thang" sans Snoop Dogg; Eminem, though, filled in admirably for the Long Beach lyricist.

D-12 also took the stage during Em's set; the group dedicated their hit "My Band" to their fallen friend Proof.

The outfield was filled with fans, and their phones made the grounds look like a Lite-Brite as the screens lit up the stadium.

Jay-Z shouted out hip-hop's fallen heroes during his performance. He picked up Pimp C's "Big Pimpin' " verse a cappella and later ordered the DJ to play the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy" and "One More Chance."

The show was smooth, but not without any hiccups. Drake delivered a stirring version of his "Light Up" with Jay-Z; the Toronto star sported a Blueprint 3-designed Yankees fitted cap to pay homage to Hov. "Welcome to the stage a man that's been getting busy as of late," Jay told the audience. "He goes by the name Drizzy Drake."

But minutes later, Drake stumbled through his and Nicki Minaj's "Up All Night." Hov offered a mulligan to Drake and later a olive branch when he told the crowd during his final song that he may have to offer the Young Money rapper a "free verse" to make up for messing up his sound.

Although Jay's most memorable performance involved his guest stars (Beyoncé also joined him, as did Nicki Minaj), this time it was a familiar face that helped him with the most moving part of the show. Memphis Bleek and Jay-Z ran through a series of the latter's past numbers as an encore.

"I got a million of these," Jay repeated twice, as he introduced songs ranging from "Jigga My N---a," "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" and "Where I'm From."

"For anyone that hasn't been down since Reasonable Doubt," Jay-Z told the crowd shortly after midnight, "you can head to the [exit]."

Justin Bieber's 3-D Movie Trailer Debuts

'That sort of 'never say never' idea is conveyed in the trailer,' director Jon Chu tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

On Monday (October 25), at his My World Tour stop in Los Angeles, Justin Bieber debuted the trailer for his highly anticipated 3-D flick "Never Say Never," due Valentine's Day weekend 2011.

The trailer was filled with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with some of the people important in Bieber's life, including mentor Usher and manager Scott "Scooter" Braun. When MTV News spoke with the film's director, Jon Chu, he said that if Bieber's fans were tempted by what they saw in the trailer, they should love the film when it hits their local theater.

"We talked about the story of us sort of going back to his life and seeing a lot of archival footage and things that have never been seen that his mom shot when he was a kid," Chu said. "We don't have as much of that in the trailer, [and] the movie uses a lot, 'cause we're finding it really fascinating to see him grow. It's one of the very few generations that have been able to be shot when they were a kid to a teenager and see all the steps of his development."

Describing the film as a "documentary musical," Chu said "as in life, when you listen to music, when words aren't enough to express your emotion, it goes into song." The songs in the film were taken directly from Bieber's concert stop at Madison Square Garden.

"It's really an interesting sort of pass between his real life to his music, so I think in the trailer, we break it down every step of the way in his life. Everyone said, 'It's not possible,' " Chu said. "Every step, everyone's always said, 'No, no, no, no.' And he's always said, 'Yes, yes, yes.' And that sort of 'never say never' idea is conveyed in the trailer.

"That's sort of the power of our movie: to help inspire kids to follow their dreams, and anyone really, kid or adult," he added. "It's been sort of a family journey of fulfilling your destiny."

Michael Jackson Doctors Won't Be Charged In Singer's Death

California state investigators will not file charges against seven other doctors who treated the late star.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Seven doctors who treated the late Michael Jackson will not be charged in the singer's death. According to The Associated Press California officials said Wednesday (July 28) that they will not file charges against the doctors who were under scrutiny as part of an investigation launched by the state's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.

Jackson passed away in June 2009 after suffering cardiac arrest. His personal doctor Conrad Murray — who was not one of the seven doctors included in the investigation — has been charged in his death and pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter after allegedly giving the star the potent anesthetic propofol.

"I am very disappointed," said Brian Oxman, an attorney for Michael Jackson's father Joe Jackson. "The misuse of medications by Michael Jackson in the last years of his life was excessive and to fail to bring that to the public eye is ignoring reality." Oxman is serving as Joe Jackson's lawyer in a wrongful death suit against Murray.

Bureau spokesperson Christine Gasparac told the AP that one of the doctors who was under investigation was referred to the California Medical Board for prescribing drugs to one of Jackson's aliases, however, a spokesperson for the board did not confirm the referral. A spokesperson for the Drug Enforcement Agency told the AP that it has also dropped its investigation into Jackson's doctors.

Murray lawyer Ed Chernoff has maintained that the doctor did not administer a fatal dose of propofol and has suggested that either Jackson gave himself the anesthetic or another person may have supplied the late star with the dose. However, an anesthesia expert has said the possibility of Jackson administering the drug himself is unlikely.

A preliminary hearing in the Jackson manslaughter case is slated for August and Murray faces a sentence of up to four years in jail.

Lady Gaga, Elton John Record Duet For 'Gnomeo & Juliet'

'Hello, Hello' will appear on the animated Disney film's soundtrack, reports 'Entertainment Weekly.'

Elton John and Lady Gaga have been carrying on a torrid mutual-admiration affair for much of the past year. The two pop icons have shared the stage several times and often have spoken highly of each other, but now they're ready to take it to the next level.

According to "Entertainment Weekly," the dynamic piano duo are planning on releasing a duet called "Hello, Hello" on the soundtrack to the forthcoming animated Disney film "Gnomeo & Juliet." The magazine describes the tune as "a charming pop track," and reports that it will be heard when the movie's two lead characters — lawn ornaments voiced by James McAvoy and Emily Blunt, respectively — first meet.

"Gnomeo & Juliet," produced by Sir Elton and his longtime partner, David Furnish, is slated to premiere on February 11, 2011.

While John has hinted that he'd love to appear on Gaga's upcoming Born This Way album, even if he doesn't, he's already given it his glittering stamp of approval.

"I've already heard [Gaga's new album], so I think it's more or less done," he told "EW" earlier this month. "Her record — it's f---ing amazing." He added that he was particularly enamored with one tune, saying, " 'Born This Way,' which is the title song, will completely get rid of Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive.' This is the new 'I Will Survive.' That was the gay anthem. This is the new gay anthem. Actually, it's not a gay anthem — it can apply to anybody."

While John is an old hand at movie soundtracks — including his Oscar-winning work on "The Lion King," as well as music for "The Road to El Dorado" — the "Gnomeo" song will be Gaga's first original contribution to a film.

Kristen Stewart's 'Welcome To The Rileys' Cheat Sheet

We tell you everything you need to know about the 'Twilight' star's gritty turn as a 16-year-old stripper in this indie flick.
By Eric Ditzian

You can go with the conventional wisdom that Kristen Stewart truly arrived as a Hollywood player when "Twilight" whipped up a $70 million opening in the fall of 2008. She's gone on to star in subsequent Twi-flicks as well as mature roles in films like "The Runaways" and the upcoming "On the Road."

Or you could take something of a contrarian stance and argue Stewart began her ascent as an A-list star before "Twilight" hit theaters, when the then-18-year-old threw herself into the role of an emotionally scarred stripper in "Welcome to the Rileys," proving, to herself and others, that she had the chops, maturity and creativity to accomplish anything she wanted onscreen.

Fans and critics, however, didn't get to check out her "Rileys" work until the Sundance Film Festival this past January. Now audiences in select cities will get to take in her work, in which she plays a 16-year-old (real name Allison, working-girl name Mallory) who flees to a New Orleans strip club and meets a man (James Gandolfini) who becomes her father figure and attempts to help her pick up the pieces of her broken life.

Whether you're lucky enough to have a theater near you showing the movie or simply want to know everything there is to know about it, MTV News has got you covered with our "Welcome to the Rileys" cheat sheet.

Wait, Bella's Playing a Stripper?
The fact that Stewart was playing a stripper/prostitute flew mostly under the radar — aside from a few quotes she dropped here and there — until the first photos popped up online in late 2009. One photo showed Stewart in a string bikini top, another the actress as she cowered next to a bed

Sundance arrived the next month, and Stewart made clear audiences shouldn't characterize the film as simply one about a stripper. "[The shocking thing is] maybe that it's not, like, shocking," Stewart told us. "It's really not a stripper movie at all."

Instead, she explained, "Rileys" is best understood as a story of a girl trying to make it on her own — and lacking the skills to pull it off. KStew called it the most personal role of her career.

"It's about understanding who you're playing and you have a responsibility because you feel like you can't let them down," she told us. "[My character] really became a part of me. I haven't felt so personally involved in something."

Stewart Grows Up
Months passed without much "Rileys" news. Then in July the trailer hit the Web, showing the world a very un-Bella-like character. We then brought you a slew of new photos. As Stewart explained to us, she dove into research for the role — and almost ended up with a new job.

"One shocking thing was to find how easy it is [to flaunt your sexuality]," she explained. "Like, I went to a strip club with the director and the costume designer and it being an odd grouping of people going into a strip club in the middle of the afternoon, I was, like, straight-up offered a job."

We're glad she didn't take them up on the offer. Stewart was coming into her own, and she looked and sounded as confident as we've ever seen her when she hit the "Rileys" red carpet earlier this month.

"She's grown up. She's a woman now," "Welcome to the Rileys" director Jake Scott told us, adding that she possessed the seeds of that maturity in October '08 when production on the movie kicked off. "It was an act of courage on her part, especially when you consider she was just 18."

Check out everything we've got on "Welcome to the Rileys."

'Batman 3' Will Be Called 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Director Christopher Nolan adds that Riddler will not appear in third 'Batman' film.
By Josh Wigler

In 2012, the Dark Knight will rise.

At long last, Christopher Nolan third "Batman" film. And as was the case with "The Dark Knight," the very mention of Batman himself is nowhere to be found. Instead, the critically acclaimed director of "Memento" and "Inception" will call his next film "The Dark Knight Rises."

Nolan confirmed the title in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, adding that the developing comic book adaptation will not have a role for the Riddler. The famous Batman rogue has long been considered a leading candidate to be the villain in "The Dark Knight Rises," with actors including Joseph Gordon-Levitt rumored for the part. But Nolan ended the debate with one rather definitive statement: "It won't be the Riddler."

In addition to confirming the title and removing one possible villain from the pool, Nolan stated that Warner Bros. executives have agreed with the director's desire to avoid 3-D for the third "Batman" film. Instead, "The Dark Knight Rises" will employ "high-definition approaches and IMAX cameras to strike out on a different cinematic path than the stereoscopic technology that, for better or worse, has become the dominant conversation in the blockbuster sector."

The pieces are certainly falling into place for "The Dark Knight Rises." Not only has Nolan announced the film's new title, he's also started the hunt for new actors. Earlier this month, his "Inception" collaborator Tom Hardy landed an unidentified lead role, with many assuming that he's taking on a villainous part. With his secret identity preserved, only one thing is certain about Hardy's character: He's not the Riddler.

"We'll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we'll be introducing some new ones," the director said.

"The Dark Knight Rises" is scheduled to hit theaters on July 20, 2012. Shooting begins in April in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Tom Cruise to Star in a Musical?

Tom Cruise to Star in a Musical?

Tom Cruise has been a vampire, a secret agent and the last samurai -- but can he cut it as a rock star? According to E! Online, the actor has been offered a role in the film Rock of Ages, an adaptation of the Broadway musical celebrating '80s metal. The hit show, which originally starred Constantine Maroulis, features such songs as Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It," Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," and Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'." Which begs the question: can Tom Cruise sing? We know he can dance, thanks to his wild performance as Les Grossman at the MTV Movie Awards. But really, the only time we can remember him belting a tune is the karaoke scene in 1986's Top Gun. What do you think: can he cut it?

Now that musicals are back in a big way (thanks, Glee!), Cruise is surely not the only star contemplating a song-and-dance debut. Here are a few others we'd like to see tapping their toes on the big screen!

Katie Holmes - The jury may be out on whether Cruise can sing, but there's no denying his wife's serious stage talents! Check out this clip of Holmes serenading Cruise with "Whatever Lola Wants" in a benefit performance for her charity, the Dizzy Feet Foundation:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt - As far as we're concerned, the handsome star of Inception and (500) Days of Summer could be the next Gene Kelly. If you saw him his Saturday Night Live opening last November -- a pitch-perfect rendition of "Make 'Em Laugh," complete with dizzying choreography -- we dare you to disagree.

Maya Rudolph - This former SNL star frequently showed off her impressive vocals, often mimicking singers like Beyonce and Whitney Houston with amazing accuracy. We know she's got the pipes, so we'd love to see her get a star vehicle of her own. How about The Whitney Houston Story?

Would you like to see Tom Cruise in a musical? Chime in below!

Britney Spears 'Glee' Episode Draws Record-Setting Ratings

Tribute episode brings in 13.3 million viewers.
By James Dinh

Britney Spears Remains Under Conservatorship

Conservatorship has been in place since February 2008.
By Jocelyn Vena

On Thursday (September 30), Britney Spears met with a judge in Los Angeles to discuss the current status of her conservatorship, which she has been under since February 2008.

TMZ reports that Judge Reva Goetz had requested a meeting with the pop star after the judge had discussed ending the conservatorship with Spears' lawyers at the last few status meetings.

Spears' father, Jamie Spears, was also present in the judge's chambers during the progress meeting. He left the courtroom minutes after Britney, who wore a black dress and black ankle boots.

It was decided that Spears would remain under her conservatorship, according to TMZ. The judge took the stand to announce: "At this time, all orders will remain in full force and effect." The decision came after she met with Spears and her father individually. The judge did give the OK to approve "investment strategies" for Britney's trust; a petition had been filed regarding that matter.

While there seems to be no change in Spears' personal life, she has certainly been a force to be reckoned with since she released her 2008 album Circus. She's managed to once again top the charts, mount a successful tour and even try her hand at acting. This week alone she brought some star power to "Glee," which tackled her hit-filled catalog, including "Me Against the Music."

Much has been rumored about what Spears is working on as far as a follow-up to Circus. After it was reported that Spears might release new music sometime this year, her manager, Adam Leber, was quick to clear the air.

"No new music news right now....Wish people wouldn't mislead you guys with BS info," he wrote on Twitter in August. "Not cool! PS- The guys that ARE working on Brit's next album ARE NOT talking about it..."

'Breaking Dawn' Cast: Meet The New Faces

After the Twi-verse adds eight new castmembers, we introduce you to the relative unknowns.
By Eric Ditzian

Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

After Summit Entertainment announced eight new supporting castmembers for "Breaking Dawn," fans reacted with a collective, "Um, who?"

Yes, folks like Olga Fonda and Masami Kosaka don't exactly have the name recognition of a Kristen Stewart or a Taylor Lautner, but each new castmember comes to the Twi-verse with previous acting credits and some online video. We gathered a handy guide for Twi-hards.

Olga Fonda
This Russian model and actress has quietly been building her Hollywood résumé in recent years, with brief appearances in shows like "How I Met Your Mother" and "Entourage." This past summer she was cast in Hugh Jackman's upcoming futuristic boxing drama, "Real Steel."

"Living in Los Angeles has given me an opportunity to pursue my dreams and has been able to open the doors to unlimited possibilities," Fonda told Maine's Kennebec Journal last year.

A 2007 YouTube video showcases Fonda at Los Angeles Fashion Week: her easy smile, her accented English and her sultry moves on the runway.

"So many girls trying to be models, like, 'Oh my god, I want to be a model!' Nobody really knows the reality of it," she said. "It's a lot of hard work, but at the same time it's a lot of fun."

Amadou Ly
Born in Senegal, Ly and his personal story became well-known in 2006 when a New York Times article reported how he had been abandoned by his mother and could not board a plane to Atlanta after his East Harlem robotics team won a spot in a national competition. The exposure attracted the attention of politicians and Hollywood, and he now has a foreign student visa. He's also building his acting résumé with theater work, a small role in "Law & Order" and several short films.

Masami Kosaka
Kosaka has already shared screen time with two "Twilight" stars, thanks to one scene in "The Runaways" in which he played a Japanese journalist interviewing Stewart and Dakota Fanning's characters. The actor has uploaded his reel to YouTube, showing off not only that "Runaways" scene, but his work in "FlashForward," "What About Brian" and a low-budget action flick called "The Legend of Samurai."

Wendell Pierce
Pierce has been part of the HBO family since 2002, first starring in "The Wire" and currently in "Treme," set in New Orleans where he also lives and which he never sees accurately portrayed in movies or TV.

"Hollywood hasn't been helpful with that; if I see another movie where everyone has Cajun accents and some guy in a jester hat is dancing behind a window, I'll go crazy," he told MTV News earlier this year. "People come here and ... then they're pleasantly surprised to see how Mardi Gras is a family affair. ... [It's] not just 'Girls Gone Wild.' It's also the biggest block party in the world, where people get to meet their neighbors and celebrate with their neighbors ... on an annual basis."

Sebastiao Lemos
The floppy-haired, goateed Brazilian native has appeared in the TV series "Força-Tarefa," which literally translates to "Task Force," and a 2008 Portuguese-language short film titled "Cara e Coroa," which can be found on YouTube.

According to a Brazilian "Twilight" fan site, in the short, Lemos plays a cop with ties to organized crime.

Janelle Froehlich
Froehlich appeared in the short-lived, syndicated, bilingual drama series "Hacienda Heights," which aired on a local Los Angeles TV channel. This summer she uploaded an audition video to YouTube for an unspecified project in which she appears to play a young journalist.

Ty Olsson
Olsson has been working steadily on the big and small screen for more than a decade, and as you might expect, his mug is all over YouTube: from interview segments on local news channels to spots on TV shows like "Men in Trees." He played a real-life 9/11 victim in "Flight 93" and was last seen on the big screen in "2012."

What do you think of all these new castmembers? Who is your early favorite? Let us know in the comments!
